1. Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to an improvement in an apparatus for collecting and drying powder or granular material, and more particularly, to a drying apparatus which separates the powder or granular material according to moisture content and collects and stores only the dry powder or granular material.
2. Description of the Prior Art
Most dryers include a conveyor having a plurality of rolls or belts rotating thereabout and a feeder or hopper, the hopper being mounted on a frame or rail connected to the conveyor and adapted to feed the powder or granular material through the conveyor from the hopper and discharge the material onto the conveyor. This type of dryer operates satisfactorily as long as the feeder or hopper is positioned a distance above the conveyor rolls or belts which are adapted to discharge the powder or granular material therefrom. However, if the hopper is positioned in close proximity to the conveyor, the hopper is likely to vibrate, become misaligned or become clogged with the powder or granular material, resulting in the powder or granular material being discharged onto the conveyor in a nonuniform distribution, or being discharged in a non-clean manner.
Some dryers include a hopper mounted on a frame connected to the conveyor and wherein the hopper may be shifted in a direction generally perpendicular to the direction of travel of the conveyor from an open position to a closed position. In this type of dryer, the hopper is shifted to the closed position after a predetermined volume of powder or granular material has been fed into the hopper, in order to prevent the powder or granular material from escaping from the hopper through the opening thereof.
